Recce

We started round 3pm so that we could show the progression of the day for the character - day into night. By doing this it makes the scene/s look more realistic instead of shooting in the day for all of the footage.

We originally planned to film outside Burlington Parade, but instead decided to film on The Embankment because of the space and surroundings, for example the London Eye and the Thames River.
The majority of the romantic comedie's I've seen have been set in London, for example Bridget Jone's Diary or Notting Hill. By filming in the area that most romantic comedie's are filmed, it connotes the genre fully, meaning that the audience will be able to relate to the surroundings.

In some scenes of the footage, people have walked by the protagonist or in front of the character. This contributes to the mise-en-scene and realism of the characters journey, hopefully the audience will be able to relate to this too because it shows the character doing everyday activitie's.
As it got darker, I thought it was going to be harder to see the character but thankfully because of the christmas lights, it was bright and bubbly which was the exact opposite of  the characters personality in the scene.
The setting connoted a very busy atmosphere which is exactly what we needed to build on the charcaters personality-a business orientated female, who lived for her job.

Final film synopsis

In my group, we all came together and pitched our ideas to see who has the best synopsis for the romantic comedy (coursework task). Once we heard all the ideas, we chose Tanisha's idea and the synopsis is of a young lady that is very ugly and has always stood out because of this insecurity of hers, however she has become very rich over time and she uses her money to have plastic surgery. Once she has a plastic surgery makeover, she is very beautiful and instantly meets a guy and they fall in love. The guy then wants to introduce her to his parents and this makes her tell him that she's had plastic surgery, this then makes him confess that he was also in the same situation as her. So this makes their love stronger knowing that they are both of the same kind, and they change back to how they were before and live happily ever after.

I think that this is a good synopsis for a romantic comedy because it matches many codes and conventions. The fact that the guy and girl fall in love is a major convention and also a stereotype that will help the audience to identify the genre. The big problem "ugliness" also compliments the genre as this is whats fought against to result in a happy ending.

Film synopsis idea- Romantic Comedy

A good film synopsis for a romantic comedy will have many features such as the main codes/conventions. The synopsis for my coursework should involve some sort of romance as that is the traditional stereotype for romantic comedies and the audience will expect that. The film could involve a story of a young girl and boy that eventually fall in love after many years of being good friends. It could be a story that shows many things that hold them back but they get through the struggle eventually resulting in a happy ending. Synchronous sound should be used to match the genre.

Analysis of examples from previous students

VINDICTIVE GROUND

I think that the effects used in this AS Media opening sequence are very good as they conform to the genre which is horror. The close ups and the sound effects meet the audience's expectations for a horror film. The fast cuts between the shots also create a good effect as well as the enigma code which creates mystery resulting in people wanting to see what happens next.

THE EDGE

I believe that this video is a very good example of an AS students media coursework opening title sequence. This is because it seems like it has been planned out properly and this is shown through the way the titles have been placed on the screen. Also, the costumes of the characters indicate mystery and this creates an enigma code. The black glasses and black suit of one of the characters may have been an intentional way of causing mystery, so that audience want to see the movie after viewing the trailer. It has also been made clear who the protagonist is as he was shown first in the title sequence.

PROBE
I think this is a very good example of an AS media opening sequence, and this is because of the mise-en-scene i.e.  the lighting, the props, costumes etc. The dark lighting has an effect on the audience as it helps them to identify the genre and the fact that parts of it were filmed at night time also help the audience to identify the genre. The props are also a good indication to the audience as to what the genre is as there are maps, photographs and reports. Also, the credits have been aligned in similar positions which sows consistency and planning. the news report on the TV also indicates that there is a mystery within the movie and this may attract target audience to go and watch the movie to find out more.

Group Genre Explanation

Today we were put into the groups that we will be working as for our coursework task and chose our genre. As a group we decided to base our film on the genre of Romantic comedy. This is because this particular genre has many codes and conventions and it has interesting themes. Some of the codes and conventions it involves is a happy atmosphere with plenty of lighting, romantic comedies are usually used to entertain people with humor therefore it is very unlikely for there to be low/dark lighting. The colors associated with the genre of romantic comedies are pink, red as they are very flowery and bright. These colors are also linked to love, sex, romance and femininity hence why they are used in this genre. Another reason why we chose the genre of romantic comedy is because of the setting these type of films are made in. They are usually set in big cities such as New York or London, we will be filming in London as we will then be conforming to the conventions of a romantic comedy.

Title sequence presentation

For my opening sequence presentation i chose to present the opening credits of 'Breakfast at Tiffany's' :
In this sequence there are many examples of technical and verbal codes. The genre of this title sequence is romantic comedy. The verbal codes of the video include the font which is very soft and feminine. This is because the font isn't outlined with anything bold, and it is very curvy and the color is also soft. The outfit of Audrey Hepburn also indicates that the genre is romantic comedy as she is wearing a dress with elegant evening gloves. Her hair is styled in a very elegant way too. The soundtrack played through the opening sequence is very subtle and calm.

Script practice

In todays lesson, we looked at how scripts are structured and what they contain. We looked at the script of 'The Dark Knight' as an example and then created our own script in pairs. we were also introduced to the website called 'Scribd'.

EVALUATION of preliminary task

I think that there were many things in this production that went well. Firstly, we worked well as a group and clearly understood what it was that we needed to conform to and we also gained experience dealing with filming and editing. This has prepared us for our coursework task. However, i believe that we could improve it if we had a chance.

Preliminary task

For our preliminary task we had to make a short clip. The clip had to have a person walking into a room, sitting down and exchanging a few lines of dialogue with another person. We had to use many techniques such as shot reverse shot, 180 degree rule and match on action. We also used the program called final cut express to edit our video to our expected standards and add sound. The narrative of my preliminary task is of a young school girl that has been called to the principals office for having a fight in the playground during break time. Throughout the video she walks down some stairs then arrives at the principles office, knocks on the door and waits. Once she is called in, she is told to sit down and is then questioned about the incident.

Explanation of 180 degree rule

My understanding of the 180 degree rule is this:
Whilst filming a shot of two people in conversation, it is very important for the camera to stay on one side of the axis so that it is obvious that the people are talking to each other. This is usually best done as an over-the-shoulder shot.
If this rule is broken, things may go wrong! if the camera is used on the other side of the axis, it is called jumping the line and this should be avoided at all costs.

Introduction to coursework

In today's lesson, we were introduced to our coursework task. we were told that it will be the opening sequence of an action movie and it will have to be roughly about 2 minutes long. We were also told that will be working in groups in order to complete this coursework. I feel comfortable with doing this task partly because i have a bit of experience using the camera from my preliminary task and partly because i will gain more experience using the first cut express editing software. I think that using the editing software is an area that i need to cover once more in order to complete this task.
